Gosh thank you for sharing this Alex. I can feel it resonating deeply. In essence it sucks when you’re the only one in the workshop and you’re also the presenter.
this became a thing about 10 - 15 years ago. we talked about it in the herbal community, coz like we are constantly putting on classes. plant walks etc. all self organised, a lot of work and also our bread and butter - all to empower our community in health agency. and even the “big names” the very popular teachers were suddenly finding that the plant walk of 20 was actually 5. or 7. or the medicine making class where you provide supplies could be 2-12 no guarantee. people either ghosting a no show or sending a txt 10mins before class. with a waiting list. completely fucked. and the weird thing was it wasn’t even financial. we adapted by requiring a deposit, pre payment. still you could turn up to half a class not there. makes a huge difference to not know the numbers. i almost have “ptsd” from wondering if i will have the size of class i’ve planned for. its the only thing i really dread about my work.
all i can think of is cell phones. Im from the generation where if you didn’t show up on time you missed out, the group left, the friends moved on, the doors were closed. now a-days you can txt and no one cares, or its believed that it doesn’t matter - you can do it online.
it’s gotten slightly better and i hope that people will start to understand that in person, community is worth making an effort for.
